My Father’s Farewell

By Lillian, Mexico

My father had been brought up as an orthodox Jew, and although he was a very spiritual man, he was wary of the spiritual path I’d chosen for myself. Eckankar seemed foreign and unfamiliar to him.

But as I began to practice the Spiritual Exercises of ECK, my father immediately realized something was different about me. He also noticed that when I returned from an Eckankar seminar I was filled with more light and love.

“Whatever you’re doing,” he said, “it must be good.” Read More

On Holy Ground

By Alex, Canada

During a recent seminar, I was feeling sick with a cold!

I tend to close myself off when I’m sick, but I wouldn’t allow that to happen this time. I knew that would block me from the gifts and opportunities available for me. I remembered when Sri Harold shared his hospital experience. He had to endure a lot of pain, but he didn’t let that hold him back from giving love to all the hospital staff he encountered. Read More

Who Are You, and Why Are You Here?

inner_worlds_27_color_HIBy Harold Klemp

Q: What is Soul, and why are we here?

A: Soul just is.  It is the creative center of Its own world.

We know that Soul exists by the evidence of life around us.  When Soul inhabits a body, that body lives, moves, and has being.  When Soul leaves, the body no longer lives, moves, or has being.  What has left?  By direct or indirect evidence, we know that some unseen force gives life to a physical body.

What is that something?  Soul, of course. Read More

Questions to Ask Yourself When in Doubt

ECKANKAR, Love, Soul, GodBy Harold Klemp

Everything revolves around love.  It always does.  No matter how much we rush about in this world and how harried, ambitious, or sorrowful we become, the world stays together for some reason.  The reason is God’s love.

God’s love is the fabric that draws us all and keeps us here.  It makes the whole work, even though sometimes it looks like nothing is working at all.

The two supreme laws are: God is love, and Soul exists because God loves It.  Very simple.

But how do you make this work out in everyday life?

Whenever you’re in doubt about any action, ask yourself: Is it true?  Is it necessary?  Is it kind?  You can also ask, What would love do now?

Life Is a Gift

ECKANKAR, Soul, Resposibilty, SuicideBy Harold Klemp

Q: On this journey home to God, we are sometimes faced with painful experiences.  During these times, some people make the choice to end their lives.  What is the spiritual lesson and responsibility in making that choice?

A: Life often is pain.  If not physical pain, then surely emotional or mental dis-ease of some sort.  Earth is God’s boot camp for Souls.

People who take their lives are to be pitied only because they threw away on a whim the divine blessing of this life.  In Christianity, it would be a final tragedy.  The reason is that its belief system admits but to a single human existence in eternity and to lightly gamble it away is to forever suffer eternal damnation. Cows Teach a Scottish Farmer about Love

ECKANKAR, Animals, Love, Protection, GodBy Harold Klemp

A farmer in Scotland had a large herd of cows.  He and his wife treated these cows like their children.  Every morning they’d come out to feed and milk them.  They would call each cow by name and give them little treats.  They’d pet them.  The cows loved the farmer and his wife, and the couple loved the cows.

One day the farmer got on his tractor and drove out into the field to check on a newborn calf.  This was risky because a neighbor’s bull had been brought over for breeding purposes and was loose in the field.

When the bull saw the farmer, he charged the tractor and knocked the farmer off and began to gore him.  The farmer went unconscious.  Read More

Your Bond of Love with All Life

ECKANKAR, Pets, Soul, LoveBy Harold Klemp

If you have a pet, you are aware of the bond of love between yourself and your pet.  This bond of love exists because you are Soul—a particle of God sent here to gain spiritual experience.  Ultimately, to learn how to give and to receive divine love.

What most people don’t realize is their pet is also Soul.  Animals are Soul too.

Soul exists because God loves It.  It’s very simple.  And when two Souls set up a bond of love, it is stronger and more enduring than eternity.  It doesn’t matter if the two Souls are human beings or if one of them happens to be a bird, a dog, a cat, or another animal form.

You, me, our pets—we are all Soul dwelling here in the world of nature.  Nature itself reflects the laws of ECK, the Holy Spirit.  We can observe the working of Divine Spirit in the habits of birds, the cycles of plants, and the instincts of reptiles and mammals.

All sing the glory of God; all teach the secrets of life.

A Better Life Is Just One Step Away

ECKANKAR, Soul, God, DestinyBy Harold Klemp

A woman worked in a medical office where the doctor was unkind to her.  She was always being scolded for this or that.  She finally couldn’t stand it, so she quit; she felt that no matter how bad it was out there in the world, she’d be better off without a job than working for that doctor.

Right after she quit, the woman had an accident where she broke her jaw.  She lay at home recuperating, wondering what she should do as the bills began piling up.

One morning she got a call from another doctor in the same medical building where she had worked before. He asked her if she would work on a temporary basis in his office while one of his regular employees was on maternity leave.  She said yes and started work the next week. Read More

What Is True Prayer?

ECKANKAR, Prayer, Divine Spirit, Listetning, GodBy Harold Klemp

Correct prayer is listening to God.  If a person is going to err in prayer, it’s through too much telling or talking to God.  There’s nothing wrong with telling or asking; there’s nothing wrong with talking to God.  But after you’ve asked your question, listen.  Be quiet and listen.

Listening is true prayer, prayer of the highest sort.  Even prayer where you’re asking God something is of a high sort or it can be.  But sometimes people carry it to extremes.

When I was a child, my parents had us say our childhood prayers at bedtime.  As I grew up and went to divinity school, I would still say my prayers at night.  Not that those of us at divinity school were very righteous.  A very small percentage were truly pious, and the rest of us were about average.  We got along.  We knew God was there.  We did our lessons; we did our Bible study and science and math.  There were also those in divinity school who were quite nonpious.
