A Higher Initiate had been in Eckankar a long time. She had recently lost a younger sister to cancer. In the final days before the sister died—we say translated—her condition grew worse and worse. Finally the doctors decided to do an emergency operation. The sister was terrified of the operation. The ECKist wondered if she should have acted as more of a guardian for her sister against the intrusions of medicine. Her sister wasn’t going to live anyway.
As the operation was about to begin, the sick woman said to the doctors, “Leave my body alone, and let me die.” They kept interfering and interfering. All she wanted was peace. So she slipped into a coma, and the life-support systems were hooked up to her. After a few days, this younger sister finally died. The ECKist felt badly that she hadn’t protected her sister more in the final days of her life on earth. Read More
As a child, my family life wasn’t harmonious. I often felt lonely and rejected. After my father died, my relationship with my mother and older sister became even more strained. I tried to do all I could to heal the rift between us, but nothing worked.
Then my niece, Mary, became seriously ill. She was a devoted Christian but was terrified of death. She prayed every day for a miracle, begging God to heal her.
During this difficult time, I remained estranged from my family. Although I wasn’t able to visit them, I sent e-mails to support my niece and share my love for her. I also shared some of the ECK teachings that Soul is eternal and can never die. Read More
Try this simple spiritual exercise to help you hear and see the two aspects of God, the Light and Sound.
Go somewhere quiet. Sit or lie down in a comfortable place. Put your attention on your Spiritual Eye, a point just above and behind your eyebrows. With eyes lightly shut, begin to sing a holy word or phrase, such as HU, God, Holy Spirit, or “Show me thy ways, O Lord.” But fill your heart with love before you approach the altar of God, because only the pure may come.
Be patient. Do this exercise for several weeks, for a limit of twenty minutes each time. Sit, sing, and wait. God speaks to you only when you are able to listen.
For many years I took my children to the local nursing homes to entertain the residents. My kids played the piano and guitar. I was the MC.
When we entertained, the elderly people, even the ones who were really “out of it,” began to smile, clap, and show some kind of happiness on their faces. Even though the children were not the most amazing singers, musicians, etc., it did not matter to the people. They clapped and begged us to come back soon. My son Eddy would play the guitar and we would go room to room singing to the patients. We always declared ourselves as vehicles for the ECK. Read More
A teacher in Australia had finished a particularly rough day with her students. She taught French to children ages seven or eight. Because it was hot they were unruly that day, and she couldn’t do anything to maintain order in the classroom.
A citywide train strike was on that week. Instead of taking a ten-minute train ride home, after school let out that evening the teacher had to get on the bus and ride for several hours. The buses were very overcrowded because of the strike, and there was no air conditioning.
Sitting near the front of the bus, the woman mulled over what had happened during the day. Inwardly she seethed. How difficult the children had been! Her thoughts went round and round as she got angrier.
Suddenly the bus driver’s radio crackled as a communication came through. Another driver was calling the command center. “The needle on my heat gauge is going up and up,” he said. “What do I do?” Read More

When I became a member of Eckankar, I learned about singing HU, the ancient name for God.
Sung as a love song to God, HU is a beautiful prayer that draws Soul closer to God. It uplifted me, and I decided to share it with my father, who was a devoted member of the Catholic Church.
My father enjoyed the HU and began to sing it every morning. Over time, his awareness of the invisible spiritual worlds expanded. Occasionally, he shared his experiences with me. I could see that the ECK, or Holy Spirit, was an important part of Dad’s life.
Three years later, my father had a stroke which left him paralyzed and unable to speak. I was very sad and went to visit him every day. Read More
